The main ways to take care of your crowning glory are regular oil massage, and the right hairstyles besides according the scalp and its hair with the right caring strategies including depending on the seasons (Please check our article Hair Care: Seasonal Therapies). Massage itself is a rejuvenating strategy.

OIL MASSAGE
This is an ideal therapy to boost blood flow into the hair follicles and also beneath the scalp besides removing the dead scalp cells. A good oil scalp massage relaxes the mind and body. The best part of oil massaging is that you can yourself do it or choose to have it done by an experienced professional or hair expert. Properly done oil massage produces natural oil from the scalp. It is thus an ideal way to check dry hair and augment blood circulation throughout the body. This is possible even if you do not complement the scalp oil massage with a body massage (with or without oil. Of course, a combination of both will doubly benefit you, psychologically and physiologically!

The moot point is not to use excessive hair oil as the scalp always secretes natural oil and there is already enough oil on the scalp. Your externally applied oil should only complement the process of natural production and spread of the natural oil and not to retard it.

HAIR OIL TO USE: Lukewarm oil helps it to easily penetrate the pores of the hair follicles. Always go for natural hair oils medicated with brahmi, neem, neela, vibhitaki, bringaraja, amalaki, haritaki and similar herbs. You can add one Vitamin E capsule to the oil before massaging the mixture into the scalp.

MASSAGING METHOD: You should use a cotton pad to apply the concoction on the hair. Massage the oil into the scalp using your fingertips.

WHAT NOT TO DO: Avoid vigorous massage as it causes the brittle and weak hair to fall. Don’t go for a massage before putting the oil as massaging is a cleaning process and too much of scalp cleaning interferes with oil input.

HAIRSTYLE: To get relief from the heat, ensure that your hair is not over your neckline. Tie long hair with a nape off the neckline. But don’t tie the hair too hard as the hair needs space to get dried. So, after taking bath or shampooing give your hair the much needed time to dry naturally and by itself. It will tackle the moisture and dry out the excessive heat.

IS BALDNESS SAME IN MALES & FEMALES?
Medical studies have indicated that the pattern in which hair is lost from the scalps of men and women follow a similar pattern. In both the cases the hair loss syndrome is an after effect of changes in the hormonal composition. Both the sexes lose hair daily as a natural process.

The basic difference between FPB and male pattern baldness is that women tend to lose less volume of hair than men. This is due to differences in hormonal composition.

Male hair loss treatment

There are many ways of treating male hair loss. However, we need to know of certain basic facts to treat male hair loss. For instance, when do we come to understand that this trend is turning out to be a problem? Once we know these basic facts it would be easier to deal with this issue with an objective approach.

MALE HAIR LOSS OR MPB

When a male loses hair frequently and beyond the normal pace, this syndrome is clinically termed as ‘Male Pattern Baldness’ (MPB).

MPB can strike a person right from his teenage. Male hair loss is seen in men within the 30 plus age bracket. More than 90 per cent of the males suffer from this ailment of the scalp.

SIGNS OF MALE HAIR LOSS

The most obvious signs of MPB are thinning of hair on the crown and a hairline that starts receding at the temples and from the front portion of the scalp. This syndrome can assume a progressively degenerating state thereby resulting in baldness – partial or total.

Certain other common signs of the MPB syndrome subsequently leading to total baldness are extreme hair loss; a bald patch atop the scalp; and partial or fractional baldness.

The MPB characteristics are more prominent with advanced age.

THE PRIMARY CAUSE OF MALE HAIR LOSS

Male hair loss treatment commences right from the stage MPB occurs. It happens mainly due to the presence of ‘dihydrotesterone’. Also known as ‘DHT’, this hormone determines the sexual progress of the males. In some instances, the hair follicles react sensitively to DHT. As a result, the follicles not only shrink but their lifespan shorten. So, the follicles fail to generate normal hair.

Medical studies have found that 85 per cent of the bald males have family histories of baldness, particularly in some of their male lineages. Hence, genetic reasons are deemed as quite imposing agents in the occurrence of male pattern baldness.

DHT VERSUS FOLLICLES

The Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) syndrome is intensively connected with the male hormone ‘dihydrotesterone’ or DHT, and which, is sensitively linked with the overall status of hair follicles. This is the reason why the effect of DHT is prominently witnessed on the scalp, particularly the crown and the temples.

MPB STAGES

The MPB (Male Pattern Baldness) has been intensively analyzed. The yardstick to study MPB is the ‘Hamilton-Norwood scale’. This clinical scale identifies MPB according to seven stages. Here are the ‘Hamilton-Norwood scale’ stages.

STAGE 1: The scalp is covered with hair with little hair loss.

STAGE 2: The frontal hairline indicates temporal and negligible recession. It is important to remember that such a state is quite normal, and it can’t be stated to be the first stage of baldness.

STAGE 2A: The earlier negligible and temporal recession starts progressing to the entire frontal hairline. This is degeneration from Stage 2.

STAGE 3: The frontal hairline recession takes deep roots.

STAGE 3A: The frontal hairline recession moves backwards to cover the scalp totally.

STAGE 3V: One experiences insignificant loss of hair from the vertex or the crown even as the frontal hairline recession progresses.

STAGE 4: There is a significant enlargement of the particular vertex patch from where hair loss is taking place. This happens even when the frontal hairline recession progresses.

STAGE 4A: Hair loss takes place from areas besides the mid-crown or the vertex. The hairline recession also continues.

STAGE 5: There frontal hairline recession extends towards and in some cases joins the vertex balding patch.

STAGE 5A: The hairline recession now progresses simultaneously with the balding patch at the crown together as one unit. The balding patch enlarges.

STAGE 5V: The recession keeps on progressing. The balding patch on the crown stretches.

STAGE 6: The hairline recession joins with the balding patch at the crown and the hair loss syndrome progress as one unit. The rear portion of the scalp also starts losing hair but at a faster pace. In fact, the rate at which hair is lost at the back portion is much faster than that in Stage 5.

STAGE 7: Almost the balding pattern gets completed. Hair remains on the sides and at times at the back of the crown.

Female hair loss – Hair Loss in Women

Hair Loss in Women

Female hair loss is one of the most common diseases of the modern world. This syndrome is very much connected with the modern-day lifestyle especially of the younger generation. This can happen also due to the reaction of the body to certain hormones.

Hormonal differences determine the varying rate at which hair is lost from the body between the male and the female. This is also true with respect to the dissimilarities in hair loss mode with reference to the sexes. The manner in which women lose hair has a definite pattern. This is clinically termed as FPB (Female Pattern Baldness).

ALOPECIA DIFFUSA: WHAT IS IT?

This style of hair loss in women is clinically known as ‘alopecia diffusa’. In fact, alopecia diffusa is the most common factor leading to the hair loss syndrome in women. Alopecia diffusa refers to that typical FPB syndrome of the scalp when hair starts falling off in a diffused or scattered manner. Slowly FPB assumes a progressive form and it spreads in varied patterns to other areas of the scalp.

ALOPECIA DIFFUSA: DO I SUFFER FROM IT?

First, let’s take note of the fact that we shed hair daily. So, there is absolutely no reason to worry if your comb has strands of your hair. This is because hair loss is a natural process. Then, the moot point is how do I know that my scalp is slowly falling prey to FPB or ‘alopecia diffusa’?

FEMALE HAIR LOSS IS CURABLE

The word of comfort is that FPB can be cured when it is detected at the initial stages. It has also been ascertained that it is in very extreme cases of alopecia diffusa that it degenerates into total baldness.

But, remember, it does not mean that you are not suffering from FPB simply because there is no visible loss of your hair. In the same way, just because there is visible loss of hair does not allude to the misconception that you may be a victim of female hair loss.

FEMALE HAIR LOSS: THE TELL-TALE SIGNS

Here are some of the common signs to alert you about the female pattern baldness or the syndrome clinically termed ‘alopecia diffusa’.

The troubling factor is that you may not find any hair falling off while combing or washing. This is despite the fact that hair is thinning all over the scalp. Actually, hair thinning over one’s head is taken as the first sign of female pattern baldness.

The worst part of female hair loss is that the loss of hair takes place from those parts of the scalp which are not easily reflected on the mirror. In other words, the frontal line of hair remains healthy while the other portions of the scalp reflect the receding or the trend of scattered hair loss.

One thing is for sure, though.

In some women, the facial hair may turn coarse. This is owing to the presence of excessive male hormone.

FACTORS DETERMINING FPB

The primary factors triggering Female pattern baldness are generally two, viz., genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – the male hormone determining sex; and the general genetic disposition.

Here are the seven other secondary factors that trigger off Female Pattern Baldness. These are crash dieting; scarcity of nutrition commonly referred to as ‘nutritional deficiency’; frequent use of oral contraceptive tablets; child birth; hormonal changes; menarche; and menopause.

The first three agents – crash dieting, nutritional deficiency, and oral contraceptive pills – have appeared as the most common causes of FPB. In fact, each one of the trio are fallouts of the modern age.

Hair care: Tackling Lice the Natural Way

The head lice itching syndrome can be easily tackled using the following secure home made and economically viable ways. You can choose the ones ideal for you. However, remember that sure results can be yours only if you repeat the processes several times, and do them with a missionary zeal.

The Common Process
Whichever means you go for, remember to keep the concoction on the scalp for at least an hour, and not to shampoo the hair the same day. Once you paste the scalp with any of these naturally prepared medications, keep the head covered with a shower cap. Then rinse with lukewarm water. Finally comb briskly to bring out the lice, dead or alive, and also the nits.

The Methods
Regular use of vinegar, olive oil or mayonnaise destroys the nits and lice within two days. Mayonnaise needs to be massaged into the scalp. Aloe Vera, olive oil or the mixture of butter and lemon should be simply applied. Use vinegar to wash the hair.

TEA TREE OIL-SHAMPOO MIXTURE: You can mix 10-15 drops of tea tree oil with the regular shampoo and use this mixture daily.

TEA TREE-OLIVE OIL MIXTURE: Just mix two to three tablespoonful of tea tree oil with a cup of olive oil and rub the patient’s scalp with this magical concoction. Cover it with a shower cap for about an hour. First, wash the hair to remove the oil. Then, rinse it with vinegar. This is done to loosen the hold of the nits on the hair shaft and scalp. Wait for 10 minutes, and rinse the hair with hot water. Next, you need to repeat twice the vinegar-hot air process. Finally, use a flea or lice comb to pull out the remaining nits.

OLIVE OIL: First, completely soak your hair in olive oil. Then, wrap it for about two hours. Next, rinse the hair with your regular shampoo conditioner. Finally, comb out or manually remove the nits and lice. This process needs to be done twice a week.

For better results, you should use flea combs in stead of lice combs. If the lice syndrome becomes really adamant, go for trimming your hair to a shorter length. In extreme cases, shaving off the hair helps. After that, ensure that you do not use personal items with the person having head lice. These items include towels, combs, brushes, hats, caps, pillows and such items that remain in contact with the hair.
